Happy Friday — we’re back with more Hot Bones and a very exciting announcement. After all those Pet of the Week shoutouts, G and I finally have a dog of our own: Meet Frances, a three-month-old lab/foxhound mix and the love of our lives.

I also have not slept in days. So this week, we’re going off-book and giving the people what they want: puppy photos. Sustainability stuff is at the end.
This is Frances on day 1.

This is Frances after getting spayed earlier this week. High as a kite. Last night we had to put the cone of shame back on. She may hate us forever.

This is Frances pledging her undying loyalty to the Feta Corner, where many moons ago cheese was dropped. Plus, nap time.

This is Frances being Frances.

I’ll cut myself off there before my entire iCloud account ends up in this email.
Do you have any advice?
It’s been a week with a lot of learning moments. If you have any advice or sustainable dog product recs, we are all ears. Please send any and all dog-related thoughts here, including puppy play dates if you and your dog are in the area.
For reference, issues we’re currently working with include:
How to keep dog gates from not falling over with the force of a thousand silver suns
What the best chew toys are that don’t get beheaded in <12 hours
How to inform a dog that their tiny puppy head will one day no longer fit through the deck slats
Lastly, Frances still has a sister looking for adoption
Check out the Fluvanna rescue page here for more info on Lily. They’re a smaller organization outside Cville and they’re doing amazing work with limited resources. Major shoutout to Rachel for helping us with Frances and putting up with all our texts and emails.
Ok, now a quick nod back to the sustainability theme.

🍝 Meal of the week: Every so often I order better than G, and this is one of those times. Snag a seat at Tavola’s bar and order the bucatini.
🐱 Pet of the week: Since the rest of the newsletter is all dog hype, why not try a cat? Limoncello is a calico cutie who will, according to the CASPCA, “make biscuits” when you pet her. Cat-lovers, help me understand this.
🍎 Like the farmers market, but better: The Fruit Market at Visible Records is back for 2025 this Sunday, May 18. Go for the fresh produce, stay for the local art, used gardening tools, hemming and mending services, and a ton of other local vendors.
🎙️ Long-listen of the week: Always love a good How I Built This episode, including this one on Misfits Market, the online grocery store that delivers “imperfect” produce and other good stuff at low prices.
🥕 I’ll trade you my carrots for your pudding cup: The adult version of this is a plant swap like the one happening this Sunday from 10-12 at Highland.
🤝 Group project, who’s bringing snacks? Resilient Together is hosting community design nights for people to chat and brainstorm solutions on how to make our town stronger and safer in the face of a changing climate. The next one is on Tuesday, May 20, from 6-8 pm at the Yancey Community Center.
💼 Job of the week: Editorial Fellow at the Sierra Club (remote, part-time, $20/hr)
Thanks for reading this week’s Hot Bones. If you’ve got thoughts, hit reply. I’d love to hear from you.
